Best Lodges and Accommodation at Addo Elephant National Park

Accommodation at Addo Elephant National Park ranges from self-catering SANParks rest camps at accessible price points to private lodge concessions delivering five-star guided safari experiences inside the park. The choice between them turns on whether you want the self-drive independence of a national park visit or the guided immersion of a private lodge programme.

SANParks Rest Camps — Self-Drive Base

Addo Main Camp: The park’s primary SANParks facility, adjacent to the main gate. Chalet and cottage accommodation from approximately R800–R2,500 per unit per night. Self-catering units with fully equipped kitchens, or bed-only units for guests using the camp restaurant. The camp has a swimming pool, restaurant, shop, and fuel station. Location is ideal for early morning access to the park’s most productive game drive roads. No guiding programme at the camp itself — this is self-drive only, though guided day drives can be booked through SANParks.

Narina Bush Camp: More remote and intimate than Main Camp; accessible by road but feels more deeply in the bush. Self-catering tented units. Better for visitors wanting a less populated camp experience.

Matyholweni Rest Camp: Southern entrance rest camp, good for visitors arriving from the Garden Route direction.

Private Lodges — Guided Safari Experience

Gorah Elephant Camp (&Beyond): The most prestigious private lodge inside Addo’s main section. &Beyond’s characteristic attention to design and service applies: canvas and hardwood suites, private decks, guided open vehicle drives on a private concession. The combination of &Beyond’s guiding standards and Addo’s extraordinary elephant density makes Gorah the closest thing to a Lowveld-quality guided experience in the Eastern Cape. From approximately R10,000–R14,000 pps/night, fully inclusive.

Kuzuko Lodge: Located on a private Big Five reserve adjacent to Addo’s northern boundary, accessible from the park. Well-appointed thatched suites, guided drives, and a wellness spa. From approximately R5,000–R7,000 pps/night, fully inclusive.

Riverbend Lodge: Exclusive-use property adjacent to the park on the Sundays River. Accommodates up to ten guests. The full lodge and its game viewing vehicle are available exclusively to one group. From approximately R4,000 pps/night.

Hitgeheim Country Lodge: Working citrus farm adjacent to the park’s southern boundary. Family-friendly, characterful, and very well-priced. Self-catering and B&B options. From approximately R1,500–R2,500 per room per night.

Choosing Your Accommodation

For a self-drive visit focused on elephant: Addo Main Camp at the SANParks rate is the practical choice — direct park access, manageable cost, and the restaurant as backup for days when self-catering is not appealing.

For a guided experience at the highest quality: Gorah Elephant Camp. The &Beyond brand and the elephant density of Addo’s private concession produce guided drives that are exceptional value relative to Lowveld equivalent experiences.

For exclusive-use family groups: Riverbend Lodge gives a family of eight to ten the entire property, with direct river and park access in a scenic setting.
